Baresdhoo – Integrated Resort Project

About the Project

Charrette Studio developed the key masterplan concept with a design and review process for an integrated resort development project in L Baresdhoo. We reimagined an uninhabited island to a vibrant development with ample facilities ready for investment.

Through initial land surveying and mapping we developed a deep understanding of the unique features of the site. The results showed high potential for inbound tourism for mid market clients, due to the presence of a domestic airport in the atoll, picturesque islands, and key spots for diving and fishing. Additionally, the direct and indirect socioeconomic boosts for the region would increase as the project will responsibly diversify the tourism product of the Maldives and target the local SME’s in the tourism industry. Given the abundant place specific resources, we believe that Laamu Atoll is operating under capacity for the demand it could generate, which made the Integrated Tourism Development vision we created for the island even more relevant.

Our design responds to the natural surroundings while playing to the existing natural features by integrating open spaces and community facilities. We have identified the main reef features, sunset points to make the geophysical features and processes part of the land use plan. The positioning and design of each feature of the project is intentional and integrated into the natural landscape. As such, we have incorporated features such as a convention Centre, daycare centre, go-kart track, botanical gardens, food courts, arcade and bowling, paintball arena, mini gold course, amphitheater, library and cultural museum, archery shooting range, cinema and theater among other amenities ready for investment. Moreover, a nearby landmass has been developed a municipal industrial island.

With sustainability in mind, we created overall sustainability plans, paying particular attention to wind and view corridors, building orientations and height, green blue plans and maximizing the interaction with key nodes. Our project responds to the local context to create distinctive features and potential for community that is clearly integrated with its surroundings.
